Canadian Volunteers - Philippines

IAT's Gobal Education Program bridges the gap between developed and underdeveloped countries through public education of global issues, and by connecting Canadian students and teachers with those in the Philippines and Costa Rica:

Many young volunteers, over the years, have traveled to the Philippines and Costa Rica to take part in IAT's projects. During 2004 and 2005 several co-op students from the University of Victoria and Simon Fraser University have volunteered to work with IAT's program in the Philippines. They conducted and documented their research on various aspects of the Kalinga tribes people. Students with various talents and skills and an adventurous spirit are always welcome.

Recent Activities involved two Filipino university students under IAT's sponsorship program being hosted by the International Indigenous Youth Conference, held in Vancouver earlier this year. Following the conference the students met with sponsors on July 2nd during the screening of IAT's cultural documentary - The spirit of Torcao - at the University of Victoria.

Connections are maintained with Canadian Aboriginal people as well as with those in the Philippines and Costa Rica. In 1999, IAT assisted the Tsartlip First Nations to develop a Montessori-based day care on their reserve on Vancouver Island.

Cultural Exchange plans are currently underway for a group of Vancouver Island Indigenous youth to visit the Philippines. They will be hosted and escorted by IAT and will have opportunities to meet with the sponsored children, to visit IAT's projects and to travel to remote villages to share culture and experiences with several of the Kalinga Tribes.

New Cultural Documentary: Earlier this year IAT produced a 35-minute video "THE SPIRIT OF TORCAO" which documents some of the Kalinga Culture through one of their tribe's many myths. This documentary is being shown in schools and to other interested groups. This informative production is available for purchase, with proceeds from sales going to support IAT's programs.

Plans: are underway to further the Costa Rican initiative.
